Week 1 Superfood Is… Blueberries
Mat, the Fitness Director at the Northwest CT YMCA, posted his first superfood for the Fitness Commitment Challenge and it's blueberries.
This week isn't much of a challenge for me as I eat blueberries practically everyday. When looking at a list of super foods, it's probably hard to find one that I don't eat.
So what makes blueberries so healthy? There's a lot of antioxidants in them, which helps fight off cancer cells. Blueberries will help you fight off viruses like the common cold. Blueberries are also considered a brain food and may even improve your memory.
Unfortunately, blueberries can have a lot of pesticides. It's probably best to buy them organic whenever possible. However, they are not on the dirty dozen list of foods that must be organic. If you buy blueberries that are not organic, make sure to wash them thoroughly. The same is true for all the other berries, especially strawberries.
Blueberries go good with just about anything. You can juice them, have them as dessert, add some to your salad; it's so versatile. Mat made an awesome choice, blueberries are definitely a superfood that you should eat often!
